How Long Do Menopausal Hot Flushes Really Last?
Kim Min-Jung

Kim Jang-Heub
Abstract
Hot flushes remain a major cause of decreased quality of life in a large proportion of menopausal women, but perhaps because they are not fatal and are usually self-limiting, there has been rather limited research or clinical interest. The physiologic changes associated with the hot flush are different from any other flushing conditions, with increased peripheral blood flow, increased heart rate and decreased galvanic skin resistance, which is unique to the flush. The average duration of vasomotor symptoms is 5 years, which is substantially longer than had been previously reported. Decisions about treating symptoms depend on the expected duration of those symptoms. People may be more willing to tolerate symptoms that are of short duration, but more likely to treat those that persist longer. Generally, it is known that the mean duration of vasomotor symptoms has been approximately 2 years, but many women suffer far longer than expected. If symptoms last 5 years in menopause women, treatment options should be offered.
